cracks

been doing a few reasonable sized trees recently and every one has looked fine but when the butt has been felled there is nastys beneath, the crack on the lime went all the way up the big wood, when i choged the first bit down it was clearly visable 40ft up!!!!! would that tree be easily safe enough to climb with no worries? i think it would but im looking for opinions.....

quite often wood cracks like that during the takedown procedure....particularly noticeable with sycamores, you can usually hear them crack and open up whilst ringing down

I love that little cracking noise Willow and others trees make when chogging down.

 

Anyone know exactly what causes it, I always imagine tension in fibers being released.

as steve said very noticable on a hot a dry day and on a soild tree like ash lime sycomore...on a manky rotten tree you dont get the cracking so nothin to worry about dude

i agree as its in the heart. if it was visible from the outside then i would be questioning the strength of the tree . and im sure we all have done a takedown where you get to a section and find a rotspot that you think blooming hell if i saw that before i wouldnt have gone up there and bounced about so bloody much etc ....

had it with beech and gum, is it due to the tension of helical growth "unwinding" as its cut?
