Robinia isnt heavy! its a soft wood.... doest it smell like pine ? any sap?

 

no sap at all, doesnt smell of pine & not heavy through soaking water up like softwoods do when left out!!!!!!!!!!! im pleased im not the only one who doesnt know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

jaggy southern tree, i cut a big 1 down in Coventry last month, spikes on the bark!!!!!The boys mentioned something about Locust tree, looks very similar. Hard as hell

 

Thats honey locust steve, or false acacia, gleditsia triacanthos.

That had crossed my mind too. One of the heaviest timbers i ever milled.

It reminded me of Laburnum, i am sure Simon said it was the same family

 

ps. It smelled rotten lol

 

 

stephen, thats a very important observation, this makes me feel robinia frissia, and if it had such a smell I bet it was a dead one felled, carrying a disease we recordeda couple of year ago, so you have it in scotland, frissias dying localy?

false acacia means not jaggy i thought,:confused1: this beast had 2" spikes on the trunk!!!!!!l:sneaky2:luckily the lad pointed it out to me.:thumbup1: we managed to chip the crown in about 8, 35' lengths thanks to 5 lads and a big bandit chipper, it was very soft to cut in the branch wood but the base was very hard indeed.:001_smile:
