Technicly it is a hard wood, but in reality it is somewhere right in the middle lol.

Would still need to be a big tree to go 5 ton.

Not as long, but longer than spruce - not especially helpful, eh?

 

You can get a lot of variation within a species to, depending on growing conditions. I have an Ash on my woodstack that was only about 14 inches DBH and close to 100 years old. The densest ash you've ever seen. The reason for it was that it was completely crowned out by a larger Oak, resulting in very slow growth. I suspect that come 2012, when it eventually reaches my fire, it may well be the greatest firewood ever known!

Its more about weight, than species, weight for weight dry wood is fairly similar.

 

A dry Beech log is much heavier than a dry Pop log, so will burn longer and hotter.

I've sold about 90 m3 poplar logs this winter with people specifying it on repeat orders & several preferring it to beech.

I ve never burnt Poplar, but appart from Oak (which we dont get here, it doesnt really grow (too windy and not enough summer)) Beech is said to be one of the best firewoods.

 

Would Poplar be better than Beech?? Id take a guess it more lively but wont burn so long.

Dont think i could ever bring myself to take pop back to the yard for processing. Then again, I dont rate beech as a good firewood either, more in the league of horse chestnut.

What is a good firewood then?

 

Beech, Ash, Elm, all work well for me.
