I know what you mean. Not necessarily the case though. As with the apprenticeship scheme, you would still gain your NPTC certs along the way.

It would just stop you doing cs30-31 cs38-39 and starting up your own company. Calling your self a tree surgeon.

sorry i should of elaborated on what i mean't, and you took the word's out of my mouth, with the cs31 to 39 as part of the apprenticeship scheme.

Could be stopped easily by insurance companys needing to see proof of at least 5years exp before they will entertain insuring them.

Apprenticeships would become the norm. There would be less new startups. The market would be less saturated. No-one would be willing to do it "just for the wood" etc etc. The word Arborist, or Tree Surgeon would begin to mean something again.

You know what will happen though, they just wont bother with insurance.

My lad has now got all his tickets and it hasn't cost me a penny.

All I have had to do is employ him and bring my company up to scratch with H&S, which has been a good thing for me too.

Same position here mate. Apprentice started in january at askham bryan college. 1week in month at college. Slowly easing into the industry. First week at college was cs30 and woodchipper tickets. Even advised to use semi-chisel chain whilst gaining saw awareness.

A fair point. However, a little bit more public awareness raising and a couple more watchdog programmes on tv etc and we may be asked to provide insurance details far more frequently.

Mine is still there at Askham but finishes shortly. I have also just taken on another lad temporarily as he was going to lose his college place because he finished at his placement, rather than that happen I told the college I would take him on till he finished his course. He has about 4 month left to do

I think its a win win system for all involved.

Good on you for helping the lad be able to finish his placement. Would be a major flaw in apprenticeships if something like that was to happen.

Does anyone know if the HSE tried to ban top handles quite a few years ago?

I remember speaking to an NPTC assessor years ago who mentioned something of the above.

I'm just thinking that if they did and they also thought that a lot of professional uses think further training should be required to use a top handle they might just look at removing them from use altogether.

Which wouldnt be at all surprising.:001_huh:
