nice, i have topped hundreds of birches. Depends totally on the situation and job the tree is to serve. I have a topped birch in my garden, its a weeping birch, thats why i bought it, i can top it as much as i like and it will always look like a weeping birch. Yes i have to gut it out when it puts on lots of growth but it gives me something to do lol

:lol:priceless and so true, gotta give those beasties a home:thumbup:

Don't get me wrong I don't like to see topped trees in the urban setting for health and safety reasons as well as visual appeal, but its has to be said topped trees have there place........

Most of the topped or reduced Birches I've seen over this side of the world tend to rot from the top down. There's one that I re reduced recently and most of the stuff a foot below last years reduction points has turned to mush.

We can always advise the client as to what's in the best interests of the tree, leaving it alone in other words. But the tree's in the customers garden, then they can do with it as they please (unless TPO'd or Conservation Area etc) and if it pleases them to pay us and help us support our families, then do the work I say. This is what we do. :001_smile:

They dont respond at all to topping, it'll rot, look awful and become dangerous! I hate doing anything to birch other than felling them! They look nice but are in essence a woodland nursery tree, with a fairly short life span in any case. Fell It!

It will suffer from "Uglydangerous birchdisease" -Betula lookslikecrapcauseithasbeenhackedtobitsiensis. If you were a plumber would you do what the customer wanted or would you do it the proper way? Leave it alone or fell and replant!

 Sense at last! Its not always about the money!
