Bio Diesel, Ford Transit and Ranger

The fuel we put through our L200 and Ford Ranger is 75% biodiesel. It certainly makes a difference when you use a tank of ordinary diesel from the public forecourts. The council are planning on going to 80% maybe even 90% biodiesel in the fuel pumps in the council yards. The pure diesel that is in there just helps the engines out and thins out the biodiesel a bit.

 

i find it very re-assuring that the local councils shy away from the pumps that most tax-payers have to use, in order to............ hmm pay more tax?????????? :001_tt2::confused1:

Cheers for the replies, I'll see how the van runs tommorow, it was totally empty when I filled it up so will be running on 100%

Hi, Dont try running on 100% bio as this will "sludge up" when the weather gets cold, and solidifys in your pipes/filters etc!

 

I run on 75%bio to 25%fossil.

 

You will need to change ALL filters after around 1 or 2k miles.

 

In a transit, you also need to disconect the wires that are on the fuel filter, as there is a sensor that will sense that the fuel is thicker, and sends a message to the ECU. The ECU will then put the engine into "limp home mode" resulting in a MASSIVE power loss, and a trip to the main dealer to get the fault code cleared- a costly exercise!

I have to get red from the pump at my local tractor dealer I don't use enough to warrant getting a bowser.

 

I might top the tank up with normal fuel in the morning then. a chap in Peterborough our shoot captain organised it between a few of us we bought 2k's worth

You can buy fuel filters that are compatible with bio diesel, not sure what the differences are but i fitted one to my old shogun and it ran ok with well refined bio/derv mix. i used to do a 50/50 ish mix.

 

My wife would run her Audi A2 on it pure, it was ok initially but eventually clogged up the filter and caused starting issues.

I run my disco on it,spare fuel filters are a must as it will bring all the nasty old stuff through. if the engine is high milage then mix it 50/50 to stop the injectors getting full of crud for the first few k. In winter keep drev in to a minimum of 30% and in the summer you can run up to 100% bio. check if you have a sedimentor and keep it clean as no doubt you will end up with some kind of pond like in it. bosh fuel pumps are normally fine where as lucas pump seals can rot after a few k. If you want to run veg oil & drev make sure the veg oil dosent have E900 its an anti foaming agent and will form a milky skum. mix before it goes in the tank or it will setle into layers. any questions feel free to ask :)
