Last year I spent one whole day in my village doing all the "can you do a little job for me Chris" jobs, a whole frigging day & no pay. What did I get; a cheers mate & a pint & a half of lager! One guy borrowed my tools & when I went to collect them I finished up with a truck load of waste.....that I loaded. Sometimes you godda be hard & say I need to earn or, if you don't, you are just going to be ripped off.

I do the odd freebie here and there. The most recent was for a school that had taken down a couple of trees themselves but couldn't shift the rubbish. The local police sergeant and head of the school board asked how much I'd charge to chip but I did it for free as the school was hard up. They stuck my name in the community magazine for free. I also do the odd one for the OAP who's obviously struggling to pay the heating bill never mind sort out that dangerous tree. It depends what mood I'm in, what the job is and how deserving the client is but I have done a few. What goes around comes around and it makes me feel good anyway so that can't be a bad thing. The ones that get on my nerves are those who have money to burn but think that you'll do all the extras for free. There's a name for people like that but I can't repeat it on a family friendly forum.

Why should a man work for free if he is trying to live?

 

When people on this forum quite rightly go on about how people devalue the industry by working for nout no one should work for free ive got bills/rent/insurance/fuel blah blah blah why should i waste my time working for free.

I was a photographer until I retired. Similar questions used to get asked a lot. This guy has my answer.

 

 

Thats so right, and its always the rich that try and screw you to the floor. Were in business to make money, were not a charitable service. Charge for your services!

My story (the short version i promise) in 2006 i finished a business studies degree in business studies and left ready to take on the business world and be the next alan sugar! after four years of working in finance my brain has turned to much ive become a much more boring person and MY GOD i want to get to being an ARB so bad i talk about chippers and trees in my sleep!! I worked with my uncle growing up (now retired) as a ARB labourer and loved it getting £40 a day but never considering it as a viable career.

 

So... Im working full time for a finance company in Bristol as i need to pay the bills etc. Through persistence and phone calls I have met a tree surgeon my age who is just the type of guy i would love to work for, my age and shares my working and life ethics. On holidays from work he has offered to let me work for him but heres the crux: FOR FREE ive done two days and REALLY loved it i have my CS30/31 booked and slowly collecting the required equiptment. I say yeah work for free but only if its doing you good experience wise and meeting contacts wise but only if your situation allows it. Id like to ask what does everyone think a guy (me) would be worth a day with saw and ppe and truck??? cheers:001_smile:

If you are making the guy more money than he would be making without you then I would say you should be getting paid something, even if it is only £20 to cover your expenses.

 

If however he is slowing his rate of work or saving jobs specifically for you to give you training and making less or the same as he would without you then maybe he is right.
