crown cleaning this oak today and out on a limb, quite suprised when this failed on me , however it made me think that Gibbon was right to bottle the other day because i wasnt even suspicious of this and it decided to go.

i hate oak in winter time, as long as you are ok and that is the main thing:001_smile:. I also think we need to stop using ' bottle it ' to describe making a wise decision.

How far out on the branch were you, when it failed?

i was quite far out, but like u say the union looks solid, and by the way Skyhuck i do weigh 13.5 stone, but im over 6 ft tall so im not fat, anyway im sure i heard some1 say muscle is hevier than blubber !!!!!!!!!!!!!

i often use 2 ropes on oak mainly to spread weight, they are rubbish to work on, at least you got off quick and didnt get a huge rip.

Is that a big bent nail in the 2nd pic at the top side of the limb?

i work in oaks day in day out......even getting out to the peripheral to do tip pruning and 10/15% reductions.....i'm 15 stone and never had a problem with failures like that.
