Slip and swing into a peg- damaged spine, bust a few ribs or just a simple impalement? Why take the chance?

Ok. Different examples. Would never leave pegs when branch walking or whereever there is a chance of a swing but still can't see a problem when working down a stem with the wood a few inches from yr nose and that is when most may leave pegs.

Oh, just peg off.

I used to use pegs quite a lot when I could, because I hated spikes.

Got more used to wearing the spikes now although it is a great relief to take them off when you come out of the tree.

They're not too good when you have a waterbed though, ran out of patches to fix the punctures so ended up getting a Tempur matress instead.:001_tongue:

think ive really started a peg frenzy here with my pictures.... i see your point about slipping or miss placing a gaff and the possibilty of hurting myself but thats what learning is all about... iv only been climbing a few months so all your points will be taken on aboard and once the confidence and stamina has built up i'll lose all the pegs but for now think i'll leave a few if nothin but a little bit of light foot relief...

I find so long as you sharpen your gaffs before you start euc's are good to spike.

still not a fan of eucy ive found using slings a better way of getting out on tips when rigging or especially reducing... 2" branches seem brittle as hell and spikes when doing felling work seem to need kicking in hard or they slip out unless on a verticle stem, maybe i need that sharpening kit!
