4x4?

Two nice Trucks there Chris.The conversion looks very well thought out.

 

The 2H Engine you had in your Crusier is a good one.Its hard to find an old Crusier like yours without alot of Rust in it here.They fetch good money here even with 400K on the clock!

 

I have a 3B Engine and gearbox out of a Cruiser in my Series2 back home.

 

I wish I'd never sold that one - it had 170,000 ish miles on it and the chassis was immaculate - it was silly things like tailgate, door shuts and arches rusting away (all parts that are now avaialble from a guy in Germany :sneaky2:)

 

I parked it up at a mate's (where that photo was taken), bought a hilux to replace it with and I remember driving the LC back to my house a couple of weeks later for the guy to collect it thinking "what have I done" - but by then it was too late to back out. The hilux was a pile of turd and not a patch on the LC. The only other vehicle I've ever missed as much as the 62 was the 3.9 disco which is sat in the back garden at the mo needing lots of welding - but even them it just wasn't the same.

 

There's a few old HJ60's with the round headlights come up from time to time on Ebay but usually they are rotten and get snapped up for export for more than I paid for mine at the time.

 

I found the Tradecarview website quite good for LC porn - there's even a few HJ61's with the 4.2td in them too.

Its all to do really with what you intend to do and ware your going.

 

I know a couple of people from around the world who have both LC & LR at their disposal and they recon both have there uses and there strengths lie in different places hence the need for both, but most will use the LR for extremes of terrain or ware this is going to be lots of harmonic corrugation (washboard road surface) or know they will incur damage on whatever vehicle they take, but at other times they prefer the LC.

 

If you weight the above up logically leaf-springs vs. coil-springs and linkage, or welded body vs. bolt together or good reliability but high parts cost vs. being a bit less reliable but much cheaper parts cost.

 

If I owned Land Rover I would have approached things a little like a truck maker would have used a remote transfer box, galvanised chassis from the factory, forged one piece rover axel casing (as per the mil-spec ones made by LR Australia in the past) then offer engine and transmission options from different manufactures so down the life of the vehicle it would be easy to re-power with different engines + transmission dependent on the market it was sold in.

 

If LR had done the above in 1985 by now they would have the ultimate <3.5t GVW 4x4 that would sell well the world over. :001_rolleyes:

 

Absolutely - I think if I was going to build my dream LR it would be 110 HD galv chassis (or maybe 130), Salisbury axles front and rear with locking diffs, straight 6 N/A diesel (or maybe at a push something like a MAzda 3.5 TDi) - body options would depend on how I felt - if it was a 110 it would probably be hard top, 130 would be a crew cab hicap. Gearbox and transfer box would probably need to be better than standard LR items, though even just uprated LR may be OK. Oh, and probably an overdrive too.

i used to have a hj60 with the 2f chevvy blue flame petrol lump fitted, loads of power, drove that all round australia including a few desert crossings and it never missed a beat. most of the ones that rotted were the ones that had heavy roof racks that clamped to the gutter rails and damaged them causing them to rot up high

As B101 said,different Vehicles for different jobs.I left a 110 Landrover in the UK and bought a Hilux on returning to NZ.At the start I hated it,untill I realised that nothing went wrong with it.A family friend bought it for their farm and its still going.Not bad for a Ute made in 1986

 

If I was building a dream 4X4,I would buy a Landcrusier 79series with the V8 Diesel and put an air locking front Diff in and that would be it.

A little while ago there was talk of uk army switching to landcruisers as its replacement for landrover, landrover had major issues in producing a vehicle that had the nato requirements of pay load engine power and low engine interferance for the fitted for radio vehicles.

If I was building a dream 4X4,I would buy a Landcrusier 79series with the V8 Diesel and put an air locking front Diff in and that would be it.

 

Maybe I was a bit harsh, but it dropped a big end at 70,000 miles so I put a 2.4 TD in it and it cracked the head another 20,000 miles later. It looked nice and drove ok but had no go wahtsoever - the Turbo engine did improve things slightly but what it really was lacking was another 2 litres and two more cylinders.

 

Can't remember where I heard it but I always remember

 

" There's no Replacement for Displacement" :biggrin:

Did you drop the big end in a 2.8 or 2.4? I have heard of people having problems with the heads in the 2.4

Both engines were 2.4's the first one non turbo, the second one turboed.

 

One thing in it's defense though, it never did fail to start, even when it was dying both times.

 

There was a few 2.8 crew cabs kicking about over here a few years ago but not many.

 

I did fancy taking the 3ltr turbo engine out of a surf and making it fit the old hilux but never got round to it.
