nissan Patrol Fuel pump Problems

Is it a tdi engine steve?

 

My disco does exactly the same thing.

 

A tdi should always have a big puff of unburnt smoke when it starts darren.

 

Thinking about this steve, you could take the injector pump off yourself and have it looked at by a diesel electric specialist- they would be able to tell you exactly what is wrong (if anything) and advise on a repair. It could be the stop solenoid not releasing in the pump (which could be a loose contact anywhere from the ignition key to the pump, or the solenoid itself). It could be the govenor in the pump playing up (these are usually a replaceable part in the top of the pump) or it could be the internal seals in the pump starting to go. The fact that you are getting it going at all would suggest to me that it isnt needing a new pump, as when the injector pump goes its usually a case of the thing not working at all.:001_smile:

Have you looked at the lift poump? maybe thats getting weak.

What does the car run like when its going-fine or down on power?

what colour smoke comes out of the exhaust?

what is the oil on the dipstick looking like? (outside chance of head gasket probs)

when it was in for an MOT, the guys had a look, when it was struggling to start, 1 of them pumped the lift pump and it started no bother, they said get someone who can plug a gadget into it, but the local place will want £40 an hour for the honour. I dont mind paying but i would rather get some feed back first on the matter, every othe rmechanic i have spoken too doesnt seem to want anything to do with it lol

I bought a Nissan navara new on 52 plate. It needed servicing every five minutes and Nissan warranty was crap. I said to the dealer I would service in house and his reply was be careful because the pumps fail for a past time and cost 2k with fitting. Because of our qualifications and vat reg Landrover are happy with us doing our own servicing as are Merc. I binned the navara after 18 months and wont be going back. Your patrol could have a similar electronic pump thats why alot of garages dont want to know. You need to find a really good fuel injection shop with good rep and put the vehicle in their hands. We looked at the Patrol but they had too many gearbox problems at the time otherwise cracking vehicle and more economical than the amazons I run.

If it started no bother with the lift pump given a helping hand it would suggest that the fuel is not staying pressurised in the injector pump. A non return valve wouldnt necessarily be man enough to maintain the high pressure your engine requires, which would suggest that your internal injector pump seals may be on the way out, remedied by a pump rebuild (not horrifically expensive BTW). It could be that the lift pump is getting worn too, but i see this as less likely as it worked manually. (unless there is wera to the operating arm making the action less effective, altough i doubt this)

@tommer. I meant all of the above. Not the puff of smoke. Te same starting trouble. Whereby today I have flattened the battery trying to turn it over. Not good.

 

with the disco you need to switch everything off and fast idle it for 20-30 seconds before turning engine off or it probably won't start in the cold the following day..:thumbup1:

and that is one of the fastest routes to killing your turbo, and generally knackering an engine.

 

If it wont start in the cold, you have aproblem which needs sorting.:001_smile:

If your pump its not leaking and it runs fine,then I wonder if it isn't the lift pump?

 

If your winding it over and it fires with a big cloud of smoke,then the Diesel is getting there,how much you don't know but its getting there.Then it could be,a number of things.You will have a glow plug relay on or near the fuse pannel,you will also have a Fuse for you Glowplugs.Changing both won't be costly.

 

Might be a place to start?

I'd say its the lift pump as they can be damaged if they are pumped without being bled, well some of them anyway.

 

If the engine isnt worn ie good compression, the injectors have a good pattern and dont leak and it runs well after its started then I would be replacing fuel pipes,clips and filters as it sounds like an air leak.

 

Air leaks on diesels can cause loads of problems and be difficult to find, they dont always leak diesel out of them unfortunately.
