Hi Sean,

I've always struggled to price hedge trimming as I feel that the task is less skilled and so I can't charge full tree works rates, although it can still take a long time to do a big hedge and the purchase/running costs of hedgecutting equipment isn't much different to chainsaws. Basically if I can get £250 for 2 men for a days hedge cutting then I've about covered costs - anything on top is a bonus.

I've seen this "less skilled" work around here, taking absolutely no care about the job, just pricing to do it quickly and on the cheap, leaving a mess everywhere. If you are going out at 250 for 2 men and kit, how on earth are you breaking even? Why cant you charge full tree rates, you still have a gang going out, a truck to run, trimmers to buy and maintain, and fuel to supply, as well as disposal, and staff expenses, just the same costs as tree work.:confused1:

we just price them at tree work rates, i don't want to do hedgetrimming so price it so its worth doing, just try to get them trimmed up right, i find its good advertising, as for waste/clippings its all down to the individual job, some sites have 'clipping dumps' and others need every bit removing:001_smile:

Hello,

Andy's point about running costs is quite valid.

However... Quoting for hedgework can put you in competition with pure gardeners so for lower hedges with only trimmings to take away we charge locally €25/30per man hour.

But... When its the grand reduction and big material is involved then we price in the chipper at €30 p/h and our rate from €30-€35per man when possible.

Hedge cutters are expensive so I have a rough cutter for woody ripe material and a best for soft taxus and thuyia etc

We use a henchman senior as a cutting platform and we may buy a smaller model too.

They are expensive, heavy and not that well made but a great piece of kit regardless of faults.
