Words of encouragement or a slap in the face

I handed in my notice at work today to take a job in london pruning mainly street trees. As I live in Yorkshire I obviously have to relocate. I spent 2yr in germany in the Army aswell as Cyprus and Bosnia. Since leaving the Army I have spent long times on the Scottish border, Essex, Wales, the Midlands etc. So I am not new to moving away.

This time tho I am nervous, I dont know if im making the right decision. My daughter is 10 now and altho I only see her at weekends I still want to spend as much time as I can with her. My friends and family are here and im not getting any younger.

My job now is low paid and only just cover the bills and there seems to be no work around here at all.... Working in london, paying for a B&B and paying my bills in yorkshire I will be better off by aroung £100 - £150 per week

I think I just need some words of encouragement, or a slap in the face and bringing back down to earth.. Plz give me your first opinions. Or if anybody out there in or around yorkshire is wanting a top climber, let me know please.

You have to go where the work is. Thats the reality of the situation that you have discribed. Surley no work is worse than being £100-£150 better off a week. Just keep your ear to the ground in yorkshire and when something arises take it. We have to do what we have to do to survive.

Best of luck

From a London Local Authority point of view, It's worth noting that budget cuts are every bit as real here in the big smoke, as they are elsewhere in the country.

Recently learnt that the London Borough of Haringey have just made 1000 jobs redundent.

The Royal Parks are looking at 35% cuts !!!!!!, over the next 4 year period.

& ourselves at the City of London are also looking at implementing a substantial cut % to our budgets.

What this means in terms of fuflfilling Tree contracts across the City?

I'm not really in a position to say & speak for other LA's.

Just didn't want to let you come down here & feel that the streets are paved with gold.

So thougt I would just give you a heads up from someone within the London Tree World.

Good luck, hope which ever path you travel, leads you to where you need to be.

be positive. I dont know any unemployed tree surgeons in london. i'm guessing your either going to work for gristwoods or citysub. Where there is training paid for and loads of constant work, weekends to. you could rent a room in a cheaper area of town rather for cheaper b&b. There is websites that offer short term rooms ie mon-fri only. travel can be cheap back up north if you book early.

if your getting between £400-£600 a month extra. you could take your daughter on the holidays (20 days+bank holidays on paye)

good luck what ever you choose.

Man up and get on and follow the work. If your only tie is your daughter and you have her at weekends then no harm in traveling back each weekend. Look at buying tickets in advance that will also save you some money instead of a ticket each week. Having been in the Army then you should be used to being away from loved ones for long periods of time, so 5 day's possible 2 weeks is nothing.

Good luck in your travels and look to the future.

You've made the decision and you will be financially better off which will no doubt help with your daughter.

Its not something I could do (working away from home) put since its no bother to you just get stuck in:thumbup1:

BTW I am assuming you have a job already lined up in London?

You are asking the question to the wrong folk, there is only 1 person that can give you the answer and re-assurance that you need, and that is your daughter.:thumbup1:

I'd say this is just about the best advice anyone can give you ..you only come this way once, and you dont get a second chance with your kids.

best of luck mate, hard decicision to call

regards Dave
