No, end one of an avenue leading to the little private estate on the the edge of the Heath.

 

Have taken it back to the pollard points created after original storm damage, back in '87

that looks like the lesser stag beetle monkey?

 

Dorcus parallelopipedus it is, Tony.

 

Thought we had Lucanus cervus - the Greater Stag Beetle when I first saw the larvae.

They are almost identical at this stage, both with orange heads, though ours were from thirty foot up in a cavity, unlike Stag larvae, which I'm sure you know, are normally to be found in decaying wood below ground.
