Cutting grooves in the wood like you have is what stopped me losing the rest of the lumps I cut out today. The lump that got away I had spent about 15 mins setting and dressing as soon as it swung into the stem it baled.:blushing:

Do any of you guys not prefer tape strops?

They do hold a piece really well and attached to a crab so much quicker than knots

As long as it is attached below the center of gravity what does it matter?

cause usally when your lowering your doing so to protect whats under it, so it gets to a point where your chocking down and you might aswell not lower it cause its going hit deck before ropes catch it. you will get to that point sooner with useing slings, like i said with the not getting it perfect length slings, useing rope takes the maximum amount of slack out the system.

on short timber lengths, close to the ground yes. But in the usual rigging scenarios irrelevant

I did have slings with me but the piece was awkward shape and a bit top heavy with nasty knucles. The piece was quite heavy wood and I didn't want the piece rotating. Half hitch and running bowline was best option to keep it from walloping the wall.

Plus the notches to keep rope in place and my mate stu (scm) on lowering duty.
