I used to do more external shaping of trees. Now I only do it to fruit trees. The whole "is it topping" debate aside, shaping a tree while standing inside of it is hard work. You guys are very good at it. There are some excellent shaping job picts on this thread. How long do those trims last? I know its different tree to tree but on average?

These trims do last and you dont get crappy regrowth depending on species.......if want i can show you properly reduced next to just shaped trees that where done 5 years ago and the difference is amazing and why i promote properly reduced trees

Sorry Colin, those are all the pics I have but I will try to get down there and take some more pictures.

Thanks. that would be great. I think from the evidence of your photos thus far that the detail would be of great help in work that I am doing following a couple of Court cases.

That's cool, if you see a good example take a pict and post it. I'd like to see what they look like later. I am assuming that trees grow fairly rapidly there with all the precipitation you guys get.

i drove past this tree today. I reduced/topped this Beech approx 8 years ago. ive been hunting round trying to find the picture i took at the time with no luck. Beech dont throw out shoots like other species, and although can be difficult to reduce do respond well providing you don't go too hard.

Another very useful photo Steve. If you do come across the earlier photo even better.

Mind if I use this for demonstration purposes?

heres one i worked on must be 7+ years ago on the left ...the one on the right by another climber who just shaped the tree around to any dormant nodes leaving stubbs as oposed to drop crutching i would say the results of pruning are obvious...
