operating one of these things is best left in hte hands of the game playing generation, but to get the most out of the timber most old school cutters(now operators) do it all by eye, they can thin woods from sitting in their cabs better than new guys surveying and measuring. I had a go in one once, i just asked, the guy said jump in and have a play, i couldnt even get the head of the deck, each finger had about 5 buttons and the levers rotated and moved all ways, its like a cockpit.

Im pretty good at operating 360's and what not and have got good hand eye coordination. Just be nice to have a bash it it one day.

my brother is at college just now and they had a go in the simulator at another college. a young lad who had never sat in one in his life did better than the intructor that had been doing it for years, but the diference is knowing what to do with the tree to get the best out of it, these guys can calculate sizes at a glance, this takes years on a saw working with timber, when i worked in the woods for a few weeks i was always getting bother for wasting timber, i would just hide all my offcuts and split bit with rips under root plates and brash:blushing:

A few from today dismal weather hence dark pics, the fir was a monster, not amazingly tall but about 9 cube of chip off it and one seriously long fat stick, and the stem was quite big too, LOL

Daughter-in-law went out to Finland as part of her teacher training, they have a virtual harvester trainer which even the kids were allowed to have a go at cutting trees and cutting to length on.
