Here ya go Mark, double-bowline on the bight, with spike, stick or whatever to allow easy untying.

I wonder if a keylock crab inserted in place of the spike in the bowline would leave enough slack in the knot after heavy load is applied. Always have a steel crab lying around when doing rigging.

My old boss used to use them old c hooks in the woods and we used to just use a hitch that was more wrapping the rope rather than using a knot if that makes any sense can't explain how to tie itthough sorry. I would love to get hold of some of the old forestry c hooks if anybody knows where to get hold of any

Lorry, get a blacksmith to make you some up out of old half shafts.

The last ones we had were made like this.

When they were made he cooled them slowly in waste oil rather than water.

I can't remember exactly why, but I think it was to do with the temper or something, to leave them springy rather than hard and brittle.

I will try to explain one knot I learnt, don't know the name.

Take a long loop wrap it around once ( or twice if you like).

wind the loop 4 times around the tension side rope, so it looks like a simple wire wound joint.

then tuck the loop doubled up through the start of the wrap, it really is that simple.

The doubled up loops help prevent the rope jamming when under load.

pull lop to release, works well on thick ropes also place a piece of wood put into the start of the wrap so it can be pulled out to ease the loop.

I also found when joining slings a piece of wood jammed inside helps the release. Just saves using shackles on winch lines.

hope this helps
