oak, your opinion please!!

am i being unreasonable in asking more money for purely oak logs as opposed to my mixed hardwood? i was thinking of £15 per cubic metre more? any thoughts ladies an gentlemen?

If i could get oak in volume I would keep it seperate and do the same.

 

I would say it needs more seasoning than most hardwoods and is higher calorific, so you need more for it.

Oak is heavier, so a cube of Oak will be heavier than a cube of almost any other timber.

 

Selling by weight (dry) is a fairer measure of calorific value.

i reckon a price difference is a good thing, poeple should be appreciating the quality of oak, be that for milled timber the living tree or just plain old fire fodder!

Very good point Dave.

 

If selling by weight you could almost sell any wood at the same price per ton, but moisture content is the major issue with that, and complications of seasoning times for mixed loads would be more than seperating species i guess.

If I was gonna buy 100 tonnes of hardwood, delivered. I wouldnt want to pay more because it was oak. I just want 100 tonnes of hardwood.

Wake up guys, the modern way forward is selling by volume, hence oak is worth more.
