Ever since I started to use the internet for one reason or another, I have been required to furnish forums and other account registrations with a user name and password. It is a question of security. I have continued to use the user name in many of the applied registrations for ease of use.

I dont have a problem with that as far as it goes. It serves a purpose and perhaps the added advantage that "bosses" will not know who you are so cannot "stalk" your interactions with like minded folk, taking umbrage with comments and attitudes that were frankly never intended for them.

You are being extremely naive (imo) if you dont think exposure on the internet is not viewed with interest by a huge number of people, organisations and businesses alike.

I would advise folk to behave in as best way they know how in all their interactions on an open forum especially, but in all their dealings on the internet.

I regard this forums ' structure and rules of usage to be amongst the best of the forums I visit...Okay, you cant swear but thats not the end of the world. In many other respects, it is not as interventionist or patronising either.

It is a risky strategy to allow folk to behave freely but this way, we get to build up a better picture and feel for the people behind the names, and this is not because of the pseudonym but because of the comments and input and subject matter in which members are active.

I sense that a large proportion of the membership on Arbtalk (particularly when it first began) are infact relatively new to forums. Some folk need to learn the hard way..others are probably not worth taking too seriously but it is also worth remembering that it is a resource for a large number of people with diverse ranges of interest and input aswell as swapping information and the like. Treat other as you would like to be treated and you wont go far wrong!

Excellent post Bundle.

Without wanting to repeat you too much I just wanted to add a few points.

There seem to be a few people on here who assume that by posting anonymously there is some hidden agenda, something dishonest, or something mischievous going on.

I've no doubt that in some cases that is true - but in most cases it is not.

I've noticed a few posts on this forum where people have had questions about their employer and the way they are being treated. Some people have even been asked to do illegal things by their employer. Often these people come on here and get the advice they need. If they were unable to post anonymously I very much doubt they would do so.

Many of the people on here are self employed and have dealings with various tree officers and other professionals. I know that the vast majority of tree officers are highly professional, but I'm sure most of us know of one or two who are not. Sometimes these people can hold a grudge against something which has been said on a forum and it can affect people's business's. Again, the veil of anonymity allows a more honest discussion.

Sometime topics come up which people are not sure about their stance on, and in the course of discussion they may change their mind several times, and say things which they later regret. Once again, the veil of anonymity can help people to be a little more free and easy in their discussion.

However, I think we are all aware that true anonymity is not easily achieved. There are many ways of discovering who someone really is on this forum. So even though people sometimes wish to remain anonymous it is worth remembering that once/if the legals get involved, it is very difficult to hide. So always keep things civil and honest, and (at the risk of being outrageously and incredibly overdramatic) don't say anything you wouldn't be prepared to defend in court if you had to.

Ramble, ramble, rant ... :001_smile:

It doesn't take a lawyer o work out the blindingly obvious. My concern obout your critisism of QTRA, here and on other forums, seems to have no basis in fact. As I have said before, I am happy to openly debate the merits of QTRA, VOSL and risk management more generally.

I would say most people dont fear other members in any way but why would you put your personal details on the web. A fraudster will be looking for a profile to build why make it easy ?. It amazes me the amount of ebay names made up of their name and date of birth. Why dont they just use their address and pin no in their about me page.
