Advise the customer on what he doesnt know or understand, then end up doing what he asked for in the first place. Why, because the customer is always right LOL bollocks. but hey if you dont some one else will. and rent has to be paid food needs to be bought and diesel isnt cheap. Moral's, are we really that sensitive about a customers tree. Grow a set do the job and feed the family.

I see topping as bodging, I have never topped a tree.

I cannot bodge, I'm an ex engineer, it is not in my nature to do so and have a thriving tree surgery business despite refusing to top trees.

I have heavily reduced small trees as a subby for someone else working for an housing assosiation which is on a maintainance schedule done every three years.

If you have to top trees to feed your family and need a big set to do so then all well on good, I have no objection

Topped trees also provide me with work re-topping and removing them farther down the line so keep em coming

PS: If my business starts to fail and I get desperate for work, I'll let you know if my morals change

No worries Andy

On the housing association job I did I kind off came round to the idea of topped managed trees simply because this row of small trees would have come out otherwise.

But the important thing is they were done every 3-4 years and looked well for it.

What I cant stand is someone passing off a topping job as a pollard

There are some Acer pollards near me that are cut back every two years and when they are freshly done they have really nice pollard heads and look awesome, I'm waiting till they are done again and I'll get a photo

You cheeky beggar!

So not only are those of us who top trees money grabbing numptys with no skill who do bad work and don't give a toss about anyone but ourselves, we also all have failing business now do we?!:laugh1:

Although I like the fact that you don't top trees you heavily reduce them:thumbup1:

In fact that's quite cool, that's what I'm going to say from now on if I get asked if I top trees. Although since I have heavily reduced lots of trees I may introduce myself as a heavy reduction 'specialist'

I think it's almost bred into them in and around the lake that tree must be topped because they must have that view. People pay a lot of money for million dollar views and if there's a tree in the way then they want it topped. I can never understand why they planted the thing in the first place instead of something that wouldn't grow to a height where it interfered with the view. Most people want to see the lake with the snowcapped volcanoes in the back ground and a tree in the way is but an annoyance. Most have them done every year or two and the local council actually have it written into there district plan that the trees are allowed to be topped if there is a situation wherby it might interupt a resident's view. I've tried for 3 years to try and get them to change the plan to no avail. I had to top out some Oaks and Birch quite recently that have been done before and all of them are rotting badly through the old cuts. The Birch especially has hardly any solid wood in it. I suggested taking it out but the councillors don't want a bar of that idea. In the end I get frustrated wasting my breath and I'm not in a situation where I can turn down the work.
