Saltex Show 7th-8th & 9th September

For those who have never been Saltex show is on next week, it has always been the Institute of Groundsmen [iOG] show but over the last few years has grown a small Arb section. Jonesie, Honeys, Richmonds, Buxtons and a few more are there with tents full of shiney things to tempt you and you can see most major saw,stumpgrinder, chipper and mewp mfg's and distributors as well as much more.

Its at Windsor race course just off the M4 Slough/Windsor junction.

 

For those in the south not going to the APF its a great chance to see whats new in and around the trade.

Haven't been for a few years - but have booked the flight for a trip over this year. For us if we are going to do one show in a year it would be this one. Covers a lot of bases in one day. Get to take to the manufacturers of most of the brands we deal with and good setting easy access in from Heathrow and Windsor for a meal before the flight home again that evening. Took a couple of Stihl Toy chainsaws home a few years ago for the twins - caused quite a comotion in the baggage scanner in the airport - security supervisor and police called - ended with a good laugh when they realised what they really were.

There's an interesting little lecture-ette on Vet' Trees on the Weds, so I think I'll try and get to that at least.

Im heading down this year as a potential punter this year instead of on a stand. Will make a change to see the show in all its glory.probably late tues and early wed.

I've just been to Jack Kenyon's short talk on tree morphology and he raised some interesting points.

 

The talk was centred around reiterative growth. My previous understaing of this was that a tree has the ability to continually renew itself, but latest genetic research has shown that in most trees, the reiterative growth is genetically different to that of the parent (other than in oaks for some reason,who's regrowth shares the same genes ). So that rather than having the possible ability to be eternal, trees are actually growing what amounts to be essentially different trees within themselves.

 

Again, other than oaks, this is.

 

It was only a very short 20 minute or so overview, but it was very interestng.
