Does it really matter so long as you do the right one at the right time?:banghead:

For sure. Getting failed on an exam because you use a different name for a certain cut is just stupid.

thats a pointless technique IMO, meant for small trees where there isnt room to stick a wedge in and still cut without the wedge interfering with your chain.

if a tree is small enough that you can get a wedge in using conventional methods then i really cant see a case for the wedge at all, a simple push over will do fine

The fact here is that you are required to use mechanical aids to assist you, rather than risk MSDs from excessive strain. Wedges, felling bars winchs and ropes have been designed for this purpose. Of course, we all give em a push to save time!!

The letterbox cut is ESSENTIAL when harvesting large diameter valuable hardwood sawlogs and also to prevent barber chairing on ash. How can someone go 30 years without knowing this?

Well I think the point i was trying to make was that he nor i had ever heard of a letter box cut.....the cut and technique of why we used it of course ,but we just called it boring out the hinge.........evan when i worked with other fallers with quality oak i never heard it called a letterbox cut

Sorry guys. You can call the technique what you like. 'Deep throating' may be an alternative. I wasnt meaning to have a go. I thought your mate had gone thirty years not using the technique. My mistake. Sorry.
