Guys

I have in my garden an ornamental cherry tree which is about 20 feet tall and gives great shade on our decking, wife's not keen on it though and says it's on it's way out, it's about 20 rs old, so we're told. I want to replace it with something else that will grow quickly and give the same amount of shade and roughly be the same hiigght, the new tree will be planted about 18-20 feet from the house, any suggestions? a nut or fruit tree might be nice.

The obvious problem is that there are various trees that will grow quickly to 20ft, but they don't stop at that height, so you either plant a small growing tree and wait a long time for it to provide shade, or you plant a quick growing tree and then reduce it at regular intervals, once it has got beyond the required size.

If you've got a sunny garden and reasonable ground then you might consider Paulownia tomentosa - it's a good shade tree, and should tolerate periodic reduction when it gets too big.

Morus nigra - Black Mulberry - ticks your boxes and will turn your decking a gorgeous shade of purple with quished fruit . Morus alba - White Mulberry - is nice as well, but slightly bigger.

Cydonia oblonga - Quince- and Mespilus germanica - Medlar - are pretty lil' fruit trees that are fairly undemanding but might struggle to meet your 6m. or so height requirement.

Broussonetia papyrifera - Paper Mulberry - and Acer griseum - flakey barked maple thingy - don't fruit as such but are still darn good garden trees.

Or how about a gnarly old Ficus - fig? Very Mediteranean .
