Jonsered- Worth Replacing Piston

Hoping for some advice about my Jonsered 625ii.

 

Will be 15 years old now and been a good saw. Had to replace the ignition unit 18 months ago(serviced then too) but it has now developed a fault where it will start from cold but if it stops while running it will not start again.

 

Took it to my dealer 3 months ago and they couldn't really find what was wrong with it. Said ignition unit should last the rest of the lifetime of my saw so was unlikely that was the problem again. They replaced the spark plug but said if it did it again it was likely that piston wear would be the problem and that was likely to be a £300(ish) job so best to put that towards a new saw.

 

First time I really used it since then was last week and it's done the same thing. Do I really need to get a new saw or is there possibly another reason for this fault?

Yeah could be the rings, although I would have thought that It wouldn't even start if that was the case, compression, is it good? If it's got good compression then it's likely to be something else, ignition and plug is new so it may be the carb.

 

300 quid seems a little steep for a piston replacement unless the barrel is damaged, in which case the saw wouldn't run anyway, piston and rings are probably around the 60 to 100 pound mark and maybe an hour to hour and a half for the labour.

Experience tells me that the ignition unit do not always last the lifetime of a saw!! Sounds like they're not really sure what it is. I'd definitely get a second opinion. Having said that at 15years it's not had a bad life....................

The compression seems fine. I have not been able to get it started since it stopped a week ago. Exactly what it did last two times when I took it in to the dealer. First time they replaced the plug. Think that may be all they did last time too.

 

I think it was both piston and barell they were talking about when the £300 was mentioned as the kind of price to repair.

 

What the dealer was getting at with the ignition unit was that it should only need changed once with the replacement lasting the rest of the sa's life.

i had similar with old254 husky the air gap needed set give it a try costs nothing also try another plug out ofsomething you know works making sure its the same size its not unheard of a faulty new plug again worth atry

If you need pot and piston look on ebay for non gen stuff, i have re built loades of saws 2 j/reds 625 mk2 stihl 660 and 440s with no problem all run spot on,for a fraction of the price.

What cc are these 625's??? At a guess im going for 62?? Or does it not work like that with Jonereds.

Yes your right Liam, the new ones are the model number and size eg 2265 etc

£300 is alot to spend on an old saw like tha, but like has been said, Thats expensive for that work, If the saw is used alot, Id just put it to one side and buy a new one, Then have a tinker with the old one and try and fix it myself, At my leisure
