Some great replies, thanks. I actually priced the job a few weeks ago along with a small Birch to trim in the same garden. I told the customer then that it would look a real mess but did'nt tell him that it might become dangerous in time to come.

 

So yesterday the wife n I turned up to do the job, I'd forgot to check for a TPO so while waiting for the TO to get to his office we decided to do the Birch. The more we looked at the Oak the more we were unhappy with doing it so we told his wife and she rang him at work.

 

I feel bad for not really thinking about it when I priced it and having to let him down yesterday cos he didn't sound too happy about it on the phone. Oh well what's done is done. He didn't call last night to say fell the thing so I'm guessing he's gonna go elsewhere to get what he wants.

 

BTW there was no TPO on it.

Then bad practice in tree work would reduce drastically and people building homes next to 300 year old oaks hacking them to pieces after 12 months of living there would also cease

 

You would hope so but I reckon that death rate would increase from ladder/tree related incidents.

Or maybe after putting the phone down on the last refusal, the owner might turn his exasperated wife and softly say;

 

"Hmmm, you know, perhaps it is a stupid idea after all - just like the first guy told me it was. If I had taken his expertly conveyed professional advice in the first instance, I wouldn't have wasted weeks of my life. Maybe we should leave the tree alone dear and focus on the making the world a better place with what time we have left."

 

 

 

That's why its fun.

 

Or,

 

"Hmm all these so called professional tree surgeons are either too busy to do my job or too wimpy to climb that tree. I'm going to start cutting tree's myself and make a fortune"

 

He then proceeds to get aforementioned ladder out of the garage.

That would probably reduce the load on the Benefit system which is another good thing, hypothetical of course

It's all relative really ain't it. If you'd done it you'd have had it niggling your conscience for ages... Well done for telling matey you weren't happy and moving on IMO

I feel that this is one of the more important threads we’ve had on here lately as it raises standards for our industry.

 

Wherever anyone stands on this opinion wise, I think you have planted a seed here which will grow.

 

You have my respect, which you had anyway for sharing your experience with others as a founder member of the SE climbing meets.
