spike pains

Does anyone else suffer from pain in the knees and lower leg when wearing spikes after a couple of hours?

Looked at a few threads metioning Geko spikes. Are they much better than the Buckinghams I wear which have to be welded to my legs to stop them flopping about?

Had em a few years but avoid using spikes whenever I can-dismantling= stress position:bawling:

geckos are more comfortable for me, others prefer trad spikes. Are the ones you using adjusted correctly?

Yep, adjust with buckles not velcro.

I think they were designed for those big stihl boots with the big heel!

I sometimes get pain on the outside of my knees, but this tells me that they aren't in the right place ie moved and probably too loose.

I'm on Klein's till they wear out and then it's velcro and unobtanium (the lightest metal not yet known to man!) all the way!

I was talking about the length, they should be adjusted as long as possible

ahh. Showing my ignorance. No fixed length. The top of the irons are at the mid point of my calf muscle

For sure, long as possible. I'm amazed at the number of climbers who keep their shanks so short. Mid point of my calf muscle is too short, it should be a finger or two below the bone on the inside of your knee.

I think the bashlin alloys are far better than steel,its not just the weight, they seem to have a bit more give.

if you know a decent welder they could extend them i have altered every set i own 4 sets i think and my favorites were the cheapest but put some nice top pads on that makes a massive difference as does length

I suffered with the same problem a few years back and went to titanium spikes (nice and light) with what I think are called dowble pads form buxtons the pads are twice the depth of normal pads and if I remember right cost about £30 on there own with out the spikes.

work in them all day with out a problem.
