i hold Ians sentiments in working with them, but they are cool trees, i like the fact the little birds can hide in them in my nieghbours garden when the kestrils are about. Dont really like the smell though when they are in flower

Great thread - I have always have a soft spot for Hawthorn. Despite being a smaller tree, I find it has the presence or something far larger. As a child I remember one of my favourite trees for climbing was a (presumably non-thorny!) hawthorn.

I hadn't realised that so much of the tree was edible either.

When I started, the bloke I was with reckoned you had to earn your "Thorn Ticket" before you could climb anything else.

This was mainly gained in Hawthorn, with a bit of Holly thrown in for contrast.

His logic, (he said) was that it was very hard to fall out of a thorn. Hmmmmmm.

Adding to the list of value is the wood of the Hawthorn tree. Trunk wood is used for carvings, and root wood is used in making boxes. When used as firewood, the Hawthorn tree wood burns at an extremely high heat; capable of melting pig iron.

Hawthorne is also good for turning and makes excellent tool handles.
