My thoughts exactly, that guys gotta cough up just over 3k per year to the company before he starts making any money, as for taking trees down, i dont own a chainsaw ticket yet.

All this Arb stuff is totally new to me, im a complete novice.

your about 10 years too late to make money from grinding, every arb firm around here has one or two machines, like others mine are all paid for if they weren't i'd be selling them, just not enough work for them or one to be honest..

As for matey having to pay 3k per year, thats about all he has to pay, plus he's semi retired and isn't short of a bob or two, he has no other out lay other than fuel and insurance, his machine is as old as the hills and hasn't been replaced, that should tell you something..

You know my thoughts mate, make sure you get a good feel for the market before making any descisions. As i've said before, for the time being use one of the local firms to hire a machine (they've got all sizes) to do your jobs that way you can test the market without the massive outlay to start with. If you find your getting loads of work then consider investing:icon14:. Also IMO it would be well worth you getting your cs30 & 31 that way you'll be more appealing to firms to have you in doing ground work (in the short term you'll earn more money with those tickets than your stump grinding ticket:icon14:. LOL:wave:

How much do stumpbusters charge anyway? Is it per inch? Presumably they've got a minimum charge.

The local SB bloke sends me and presumably dozens of other tree firms mailshots and leaflets trying to sell the service. They are on a loss straight away. Im also led to believe they must buy the cutter teeth from the franchise bosses only, at inflated prices. Having a few leads put your way is not worth the fees. I got a small rayco last year and its paid for itself easily. including spares and repairs. ( sodding scaffold clamps get every where)

Cheers for the advice mate, could be the sensible way to go about it, just invest in a descent trailer, stick in a few adverts etc then hire in a machine as and when. as for cs30/31 been shopping around for prices, most quotes come in around the £500 for the training plus the good old vat, then assesment and reg on top:scared:

I know for a fact that none of the tree firms in my area own a stump grinder, they all just hire one in when needed.

I wouldn't even think about stump grinding without your chainsaw ticket, you'll soon get p*ssed off grinding stumps that have been left 2' high when one cut with a chainsaw could save you a lot of time.
