oak, how much?

Any idea how much i should offer for a large oak butt. it is aprox 20 ft long and 48 thick and nice and straight. its on a bit of land i have done some work on, its just lying there, it splits in 2 at about 20ft and the land owners have been hacking at it for firewood. i fancy planking it there, just not sure what to offer:confused1:

no chance mate, they know its worth something, say i spend a day planking it on my alaskan then thats a days money to start then what they would want a few hundred quid for the butt i cant see it making me any money. how much would the planks be worth??

Try offering a bottle of strong stuff and explain if its left there it will rot as none of them there have a saw big enough to log it up!

£4-6 a hoppus foot maybe. if it's been down a long time it will be as hard as nails.

If i have to extract the log then i dont generaly pay for it, or give a gesture, as at the moment even though they know it will have a value, that value is irrelevant until you or someone else has got it out, milled it, dried it, planed it etc etc.

If they get it to roadside then it may be worth ABOUT a quid per cubic foot, if they deliver then 3-5 per cubic foot (*hoppus feet). Big logs, although attractive seeming, can be a lot more hassle than they are worth, alot of commercial mills wont deal with that size at all any more, preferring up to 2'6"-3' generally as a max. There can be large shakes in the timber when it is that size, or pockets of decay from years back etc etc, hence the small value in its raw state.

 

Once it is milled, green oak seems to be fetching up to about £35/ cubic foot, depending on quality and beam/ board size. Air dry about £10 more per cube.

I pay £60 - £70 per cubic meter of heartwood at the roadside for >24" DBH.
