Why is the pay so low??

do i deserve a payrise? :P

I don't think the issue here is whether you deserve a pay rise or not (I'm not picking on you personally, just using your question as an example) I think it's what's a fair wage for this type of work. I know different companies pay different rate and you make your choise but I really get quite annoyed when people start whinging, thinking they should get more money. When you apply for the job in the first instance you know what the wage you'll be getting is. If you don't like the fact and think that once you have the job you can argue for a rise then tough, you accepted the pay rate when you accepted the job!!

Here's one though...............

...........should climbers get a higher wage than a ground worker? If yes, why? Is a climbers job more dangerous than those working on the ground? Is it a more skilled job? I know you need extra NPTC's to be legal but does that warrant the extra money?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not having a go cos climbers are generally better paid, I'm more than happy to work on the ground........in fact, just to work full stop would please me:001_tongue:

i agree with you whole heartedly grizzly, im happy to just be in a job in this current economic climate.

i think climbers deserve a higher rate of pay than a groundsman because it is 'danger pay' so to speak, but climbers are also of a much higher skill level than groundsmen.

i think it is the skill/experience level that judges what salary you are paid, i know sub contracting climbers that ask 120 a day, and should be getting paid 90 a day at most because they just arent that good. my boss says if your paying a climber 150 a day that they should be able to undertake any work you ask of them.

personally i have only worked for 1 company during my year and a half career so far, so i myself dont know whether the grass is greener on the other side, im just thinking to myself at the moment, is this what i will be getting elsewhere.

ive worked my way up the wage ladder at this company, going from a 20 pound a day brush dragging apprentice to what im on now, but im far from complaining because i have very good hours which make up for the slightly lower salary.

I can think of some "climbers" who are far lower in skill than you average groundsmen, and therefore make the groundys job

A) more dangerous

and B) far harder.

Why are they climbers then? I hear you ask.

Mainly because if they wanted to get on in the industry, and earn more, the career plan requires them to climb.

Gimme a skilled groundy anyday.

Oh joy the old "climbers v groundsman" debate......again:001_rolleyes::biggrin: Personally I feel people should be paid for the work they do, their aptitude to do their job, regardless of whether they are up a tree or on the ground. A good climber can do his job without hesitation, with skill and knowledge of his job, a good groundie does all this, and clears up too, so deserves more than the climber:001_tt2:

A good team will make the company more money, so the team should benefit financially from working together to get the best results for the company.

to the original post, i think the jobs you see advertised are advertising the rates of pay for any level of expertise. tha advertised rate is generally the minumum you will be paid, if you turn up and are worth more than the advertised rate, youre pay will generally reflect this.

youre plummer mate studied for 3-4 years to earn over 30K, on the books or S/E? its easily acheiveable to earn 30K plus, on the books, 3 years after a 10 week course´as a climber with the right company

It matters not what the job is, you'll never make money working for someone else.

Yes you will, Good people get paid good money.

Experience is the key and until you have got it, You have to take the crap money on the chin.

:thumbup1:Brilliant post IMO

Wish it was like this though. I posted a similar comment a few weeks back its regardless of skill and who works harder at the end of the day your there to earn monney for yourself and your employer (if you have one) some 'climbers' who rarely climb anymore still get 120 a day and when they are on the ground they do nothing but tell everyone what to do and how we are doing such a bad job???

Imagine that great climber coming down after a hard climb knowing that he has to clean everything up. It shouldnt matter about groundie vs climber it is ike Andy said a team.

Reasons why I think the pay is low.

1. ATM there is loads of unemployed tree people looking for work.

2. In a lot of cases both commercial and domestic trees are just a PITA and alot of people think there is no value in them therefore no value in working on them.

3. For some reason people will employ anyone who has a chainsaw and truck, dunno how many times ive been asked for certs or insurance but it isnt many.

4. Because of above loads of lads just buy a saw and truck then go knocking for work and get it no problem.

5. The overheads are fairly high, look what a small company needs to run a gang compared to an electrician, bricky, plumber, roofer etc. Therefore profits are lower.

6. Trees in general dont demand work to be carried out but electrics, roofs, water etc do. There are LOADS of jobs I have quoted for that have never been done.

7. When atraining centre gets set up (like it did here) the local job centre thinks its an excellent idea to put every young lad on the dole through arb training. SO, you end up with loads of lads looking for work that doesnt exicst.

8. For some unknown reason people think there is loads of money in tree work and therefore go and get qualified. :confused1:

When the groundie can match the climber and give the guy a break now and again, THEN he should be equally paid.

end of the day most groundies ive worked with would not fight me for the climb cos A were going home sooner! and B its just darn HARD WORK!

Not all the time, Ive had climbers laughing there balls off because they've had it easier up the tree on certain jobs, Then other times ive done the same to the climber when the climbs harder, Swings and roundabouts.
