For anyone who doesn't know, this is the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. There's a bit later on where Arthur discovers the bird-people of Brontitall. By throwing the cup at the machine, he inspired them to fck off the robots altogether and go back to living as birds.

Okay, I will slightly venture there.

If you have a dataset, it used to be the case that you needed to hire people to interpret that data. Now you don't need to. You can prompt an AI to do the work.

AI programs such as Perplexity - for research, Chat GPT - for realtime image recognition, and Claude -  for creating bespoke AI agents, means that things are rapidly changing. With a bit of thought you could have an architectural company on your telephone. No staff, no offices, just tech doing whatever you tell it to.

But to what end? What are all the ex-staff, and most of the rest of us humans, when extrapolated, going to be doing? After initially telling tech what to do.

That is not my problem.

If I was in charge of things I would have a Universal Basic Income, which allowed everyone to thrive, but I am not in charge, and wouldn't want to be.

I'd rather you in charge than Musk or Thiel, or indeed their AIs.

Side stepping the UBI concept. I think humans, or any animal for that matter, is instinctively programmed to have to work in order to exist. We need that as a basic motivation to function in life. Take away the need to work and pretty soon things will start to break down I reckon.

I think that if we didn't have to worry about a roof over our head and a secure food source, people would still choose to do useful things.

Something is going to have to be done.

There is member on here, @Welshfred who put me onto an excellent book called "The Ministry For The Future" - in that there is a section that describes how we used to think that everyone would ultimately have a better quality of life, then at some point the billionaires decided that they would just hoard their wealth instead.

AI is going to change things and the people running the show have no intention of sharing their sweets.

"The devil finds work for idle hands"... if we were all sat about doing not a lot with the machines doing it all some of us would find useful things to do (that the machines weren't doing), but there would be a greater portion who would be doing things for their own ends - and some of them will be criminal things. I reckon got to keep the population busy with a purpose to keep society on track,
