Was climbing with my petzl steel carab today, and noticed that it was a bit sluggish on closing.  Would something like PTFE spray or 3in1 be good on that?

Or any other suggestions?

If you bought a Toyota Corolla and didn't change the oil for fiteen years, it would probably still work. Climbing gear users shouldn't be taking the piss like that but climbing gear manufacturers should be building resiliency into their products.

Im  sure that that most of them do but you know people and people can sometimes be reckless. You can purchase a brand new crab and gum it up to death on the first climb on a sticky grand fir. Or just leave it in the bottom of a wet kit bag for a month. Resilience while using the gear appropriately.

On the corolla thing, yeah it might still work but tbh it might not be performing as it should, if you didnt change the oil or at least top it up then I reckon it would soon be toast. If it isnt toast then its lifespan will have gone down hill fairly fast, faster than a fat man rolling down a rally fat hill, really, really very fast.

Change the oil on your Corolla mate.

I do agree to a good extent. You wouldn't expect a chain to do seven months without being sharpened. But manufacturers should be pushing to be more and more idiot proof, lest they rest on their laurels instead.

As above, just soap and water then an airline. If that doesn't remedy the issue then I'm thinking of a replacement.

I’ll blow a load of brake cleaner or wd40, then the airline, if it doesn’t work properly after that, it gets relegated to less critical duties.
