A good thread to read, one comment - for the brands, it would be more handy perhaps which to avoid - the names all do the job well enough, some better than others but none are machine killers.

 

 

Personally, as above, my saws, trimmers, blowers, etc, my fuel, I am responsible for them, I mess up I foot the bill, and if I borrow anything it is always on the understanding that if I damage them I replace - and the same goes the other way. I don't get through as much as some, working on a basis of 2 fuel cans (1 usually empty ready to fill as necessary), and oil added when they are filled.

@AHPP Not everything I buy is cheap or fake, mostly just the unimportant things. My recent Makita XGT kit purchases are totaling over £2100 at the moment and theres still more bits that I want to buy!

Neither. Whilst Castrol may make Stihls oil, its to their own spec, the dye will likely be added last

Slight off topic, the BP refinery in Grangemouth used to supply nearly all petrol in Scotland - from Asda to BP and everything in between. Came out the same nozzle at the pump there... but each company had their own proprietary additives and blend (blended as it was filling the tanker). Castrol might be the same with Stihl, out the same machine with the option to specify the exact blend and additives.

Ive been using red Oregon two stroke oil for the last three years at 40:1.  No engine failures yet! Please note I havn't taken any apart any engines that have used it, which would be the best way to confirm its quality and check the big end, however I've inspected several pistons with a torch and they look good.

Same.  Neat petrol goes in either jerry cans or rectangular 5l petrol cans.  Mix goes into either the combi can or reused aspen bottles for the strimmer.

AMS oil and Redline have been battling it out for years. Very very fine line between some of them I should imagine.

 

I've run my 500i on Redline from new and the compression is literally painful. 

 

Its a shame redline is about five times the price of most other decent oils ! Anyway I need to do some research on this stuff. Thanks

It is cheaper than a new pot and piston though .

This oil discussion it’s strange to me I use Stihl Hp super some of my brush cutters more that 2000 hours I think much more now at least one MS 261 is more than 2000 hours and a Husqvarna 572 with crazy hours all going well I never had damaged engine in my live due to oil mix it is always slow compression loss and power shortage due to aging! Off course you can be unlucky sometimes but in general just use oil what manufacturer recommend with recommended ratio and you have guaranteed that all be fine , all those racing and motorbikes stuff strange ratios and so on is bunkers, most damage I seen is due to reckless use or absolute lack of maintenance, I tell more  every second saw user I seen not understand what maintenance is at alll: dull chains 10 years old spark plugs, petrol mixes of  unknown age , never replaced air filters , dirty engines with bad air circulation worn sprockets and so on. To the topic  just keep mix in special can  with proper use by date markings , as it must and it will be doesn’t matter what color it is !
