I started in the woods at 9 years old. We used to grind stumps by hand back then, with a mattock and bar. A bag of rice, a tin can and a box of matches, that's what the old man would give us to live on for three weeks while we felled a hundred ton each - minimum, and ground the stumps. The hardest of work, lads.. But it was honest work.

A mattock? Luxury! We had to grind the stumps out with the teaspoon we had for the sugar in our tea, except we had stump chippings instead of sugar!
