Cutting a Japanese pagoda tree in my garden

Hi. I have a Japanese Pagoda tree about 55ft

high in my garden. I am told it’s roughly 30 years old. It is 7 m away from the house and 2.5m away from the garden wall I share with the neighbours. I want to cut it down as it is right in the middle of my garden. One of my neighbours is concerned that cutting it down will undermine the garden wall that we share. Is this a valid concern or should it be ok to do? Thank you for any advice out there.

No way is that 55m high - 55ft more like it. Best to find out what type of soil you’re on first, ie shrinkable clay, sandy etc and I’m sure someone with far more knowledge than me will be along to advise in due course.

Sorry! Duh! Yes 55ft I meant. I’m pretty sure the soil is clay. Thanks for your help.

Well I'm not an expert on such things but I wouldn't even consider heave/shrinkage in that location.  Personally I'd say you're over thinking things but as said I'm not an expert in such matters

 

If you do take it down try to preserve good lengths of the stem intact; it's a stunning timber that a professional woodturner would appreciate

I’d echo what Nepia says except for the wood turning bit.

 

They are nothing more than time wasting hippies. They might appreciate it, they rarely pay for it. Just show you some bowl or spoon they’ve whittled and expect you to give a shit.

I’m mainly checking because my neighbour is worried about the wall. The guy I’m thinking of paying it to take it down concurs and insists there is no danger of damaging the wall at all. I am reassured by your comments. Thanks to all.

Ive never cut down a tree then been called back due to heave.

Not like some historic case of a million year old oak tree next to a 5 year old property like.
