cheers guys

will look to adjust the valves later today if i can get hold of a feeler gauge.

If not ill order a kit with one.

still lost the love for stihl at this time.  As said i think ill start moving over to Husky .

If you havent done it before, watch a video of it being done first. You need to set the piston at TDC and to know you have, there are markings on the flywheel to help you, but you have to know where to look.

You should replace the gasket, they wont run properly if theres an air leak. The feeler has a narrow tip, I was going to modify a standard one but really not worth the effort!

Clearances should be checked on a cold engine. Turn to TDC and check its the compression stroke with both rockers free to move.

As he said but if you know a bit, I pull the plug out, get the piston at TDC, rock the flywheel to and fro and if the tappets don't move, you have the compression stroke which is the one you need.

Personally, I adjust the tappets by feel and you can get them pretty good this way.

One of the symptoms that the tappet gap is too big is that the engine gets very hard to pull over. This is because the large tappet clearance stops the automatic decomp system from operating correctly.

The kit comes with a new gasket
