Carling Darling!

Ever since 2000 I have been cycling a 3.5 mile circuit with a couple of steep hills to try and keep not only a level of fitness but also to keep the road verges clear of rubbish that people insist on throwing out of their cars here.

ladt Friday we went away for a Wedding and came back to find these thirteen cans of Carling strewn out along a short stretch of road near our home, less than than 200 yards   It may be just that they buy the stuff at a local garage and by the time they have finished drinking it they are here, or it maybe that someone knows I pick up rubbish and is being a , well you know the word.  Either way if I ever was to catch them I am sure the police would not be interested so what would you lit do if you were in a similar situation?IMG_7737.thumb.jpeg.f4886c6b7d5434d3dbe51a96ec54cf01.jpegIMG_7736.thumb.jpeg.a753d627992f740d0a02bd4c9b51aaa6.jpeg

Do you have the same conflict about glove colours that I do? Red should be left as per boats’ and planes’ port and starboard but it should be right as in rock climbing convention (red sounds like right in challenging communication conditions). Nothing’s straightforward on this planet.

Don’t get me started on gloves!  I am totally left handed and have ended up with seven left handed gloves.  Logically I should take off my left gloves to do things like opening doors or other general things so you would think I should have seven right handed gloves having discarded the left gloves somewhere. This explains my mid matched pair in the photo!

Likewise, similar 1/4 mile walk from the house except mine is MuckyDs wrappers and Costa cups (and one block who discards his cigarette box every other day). What annoys me is the litter bin is about 5m from where they throw the packaging out the window, fag packet I suspect comes from one of the workers at the yard down the road.

About 15 years ago on my circuit there is a remote lay-by where someone had dumped a boot full of rubbish.  He had left a number of letters with his home address not very far away.  I reported him to the council in the days when we had a good bloke in charge of such things, he had to come out and verify as apparently people will plant letters of people that dislike and report them.  Anyway I was expecting no result but about three months later it said in the paper that “a man has been fined for littering at ….”  So it worked in those days but I was disappointed to see that his name was withheld.  I did think that the recent littering might be some kind of vendetta but unlikely after all this time.

i think I will stick by my earlier theory of some workers buying a carton of Carling at the garage three miles away ( I have also found the cardboard cartons) and drinking a can in the time it takes to arrive here

Some suggested putting up a trail cam as the police would be more interested in drunk driving, but it may be the passengers who are guilty

Trail cam might not be useable by the authorities unless you also put up a notice warning that CCTV is in operation - it might give them enough to know to hang out there at say 5:20 on a Friday evening but even with clear faces, reg plates and so on, no warning means the footage can't be used.

Had a similar good story the other week, some fly tipping I'd reported (too much for me to put in the car) had some addresses, originator owned up and was set a fine, good news was the council man said since he had fessed up, no need for me to go to court to be a witness! Serious stuff.

I hope at some time it may be possible to print a barcode on say cans and cigarette packets to identify who bought them and where

Another possibility is to give school children a day of picking up rubbish, with perhaps a tractor protecting them at either end and a trailer bin in the middle.  Firstly it would instill in them a sense of responsibility and secondly if they see their mum or dad do it they might say “ Dad , if you chuck that out I gotta pick the xxxxxx up!”
