How much should I charge for using my truck

Recommended Posts

I think you need to consider insurance - have you included business use? After that, you don't want to be involved in anything that could be construed as hire and reward.

I'd personally be looking for a day rate that reflects use of the truck, plus whatever other saws or tools you use. That's kind of how subbie climbing works, we don't charge just wage as it has to cover all gear etc.

Paperwork for mileage would drive me nuts, but I hate paperwork and am crap at getting it done.

I have done before up to 50miles a day here. As the owner has another estate 11miles down the round and I have found myself going backwards and forwards plus towing machinery between estate and all the little bits between

I will do mark.

it will be easier for me to just make it a day rate average rather than adding mileage on.
would £40 a day be a start?

That’s a sensible starting point mate.

However, I would point out what you’re doing for them and say what they come back with first.

If they come up with more than £40, great.

If it’s less, stand your ground.

Yes give it a go.  If a business leased a ranger then paid for fuel, maintenance, insurance etc itd be that.  Maybe over 10 miles, or as someone suggested when you leave the estate or something it jumps up or you charge per mile.

As a starting point you can hire a Ranger for about £25/day.

Then HMRC guidelines are 45p/mile.

When I needed to rent a truck earlier in the year it was incredibly difficult and the best price I could find was I think £500 a week.

Where are you renting a truck for £25 a day?

And don’t forget the BIK tax that’s changing for pickups in April, that’s if it applies to your business/vehicle. To me it sounds like the estate you work for should have a vehicle that you use. I certainly wouldn’t be entertaining the 45p a mile rate if it was my truck, as you say, I’d start at the £40 day rate and see how that goes.
