The fact you thought Marlow Gecko was double braid would make me question the quality of the DB spliced on the friction saver.

Thats from the advert for it. Braided core, which it is not. Perhaps I misunderstood what it was but I have only researched and attempted double braid and class 2 splices so far.

I have added an adjustable prussik using Ocean 8mm cord and a DMM ring.

I will add whip/lock stitching later - before they are used. Also add a sleeve to protect the splices.

I have a monkey fist throw ball that fits through the large ring and catches on the others so should be good for retrieval.

New kit has 6 months before it requires LOLER :)

That looks pretty smart mate, I’d climb on it.

The kit has to be certified in the first place though, before the LOLER 6 month thing becomes a worry.

You can’t make one out of some braided tampon strings and a couple of napkin rings and just say ‘I’ll be alright for 6 months’.

Very true.

But that isn’t new, it is home made.

I climbed on and made my own bits and pieces for years.  Just climb safe and don’t get in a position where someone questions the quality or equipment you’re using.

Or better still.  Just switch to SRT and never have to worry about such stuff again.

p.s.  Don’t use what you have made on a Friday afternoon.  If there is even a 1% chance of it getting stuck - it will on a Friday arvo.

Ah, well hang on. By my understanding steel does not like to be dropped, and is prone to micro fractures as a result, whereas aluminium doesn't mind it quite so much... and according to some vague anecdotal evidence I recall hearing years ago, actually strengthens after one initial drop and bounce on a hard surface...

It's not going to matter,it will never be loaded enough to come close to it's SWL let alone breaking strain.

I mean in fairness that creation looks like it would get stuck just about anywhere. Size ae that ring…

Kram, the 16 strand bit on gecko is a big give away. I’m inclined to suggest you should slow down with this stuff until you understand it better.

Lots of things are possible with splicing, but honestly the cambium savers on the market are much better than what you’ve made.

Had some problems isolating the limb. I dont often use a throw line but I wanted to set it from the ground., and the limb I ended up with was a bit lower than I wanted.

A single 12oz throw bag is nowhere near enough weight for isolating, so ended up tying a water bottle to add 500g, it worked. I'll melt some lead and make a more suitable weight..

It worked great. I thought 1.5 meter length would do bigger limbs, I think this is about the limit for it. I'll be making a longer one!

Its the big limbs that have the most advantage to use it.

Retrieval was interesting. It came down no problem using my small throw ball but as you can see the long cord had wrapped and could have got stuck, needs to be shortened.IMG_20241029_171048.thumb.jpg.c1fde00b4c5b1beba5389ca85fb0074a.jpg

The throw ball is a 20mm ball bearing with cheap cord for the monkey fist.
