Another Chipbox Problem

Looks easy doesn't it, when you watch someone else doing it.:drunk:

I've welded everything but ali. Should be a laugh :icon14:

:icon14: It certainly does! I used to work for a firm that made a couple of bodies for PeteB and I had ago when they were set up for welding the ali floor, I just ended up with a molten blob on the bench!:cussing:

I made my chip bin out of box section and used 1mm galvanised steel sheet, much cheaper than ally yet does'nt rust and still looks ok after 5 years. Vinyl signwriting sticks to it too. the best way to attach it is with tech screws.

To do long runs in ali welding you need a push/pull mig unit.

Dean, why not lower the overall profile of your box, but make it full length? If you took the roof all the way to the back it would make a big difference (less drag and swirl at the tailgate). I built a body like this out of 3mm chequer plate on my 130 crewcab, made it 6" higher than the roof of the LR, had no problems.

Sounds a good idea, I would have to have a measure tomorrow to see what height is would be.

I use the back as a Guns and Beaters transporter in season, so need enough height for people to get in easily. But yeh, I think a long low slung box will look well.

Why the push/pull feed on the welder, is the wire bad for jamming?

Proper ali welding wire is to soft to be pushed through. You need a second powered reel in your torch, to pull it through - push/pull unit....

Forget your beaters. Your main business is tree work. no offence, but your current box looks well pikey. A proper folded chip bin out of ally will look the proper business.

If you want, my cousin will build you a superb folded welded alloy chip box. He used to build Alloy bulker tippers for montracon, so what you want would be peasy squesy...
