Briggs and Stratton V twin engine.

Recommended Posts

Could anyone please advise me. I have a ride on lawn mower that isn't working. The engine is a Briggs and Stratton Vanguard V twin 20hp. When I took off the air filter to access the carburettor i noticed there was two pipes coming from the top of the carb. The thicker one goes back to the fuel pump to provide the fuel supply. The thinner one is just hanging beneath the engine. My question is what is the purpose of the thinner pipe and should it be attached somewhere or is just some sort of breather. Many thanks in advance for any advice.

The symptoms are that the engine starts and runs really lumpy for a short while and then cuts out. While it is running petrol is spurting out of the thinnest tube that is hanging beneath the engine which comes from the top of the carburettor which is why I originally thought it perhaps should be attached to something. The ride on is an MTD Cub Cadet 1200. Many thanks for the replies.

It will have a vacuum pump on it, a pipe to the rocker box cover to actuate it, yes if there is fuel coming out of that pipe then the carb is flooding, looking at the pictures it looks like it’s never been off so a Google service on it, also be aware there will be an anti fire solenoid on the base of the carb, you should here an audible click as you turn the ignition switch on, if not we could have an issue with that.

Thank you so much for the replies. Looks like I have to take the carb apart. Would anyone

know what model the carb is in case I have to buy any spares.

You dont need to know the make and model of the carb. The unique briggs and stratton engine codes on the blower housing will give you a parts list which will inform you what carb is fitted and the part numbers required to order. It will be model, type and code...thats how the engine number is formed. Just type the model and type numbers into google and you will find a parts list. The first two numbers of the last set of numbers. ...the 'code' will tell you the year of manufacture should you need it.
