With a pre 97 license am i correct in thinking cat C for 7.5 truck and E for trailer ( is the E only if the weight is over 750 for the trailer ? ) if anyone has undertaken the course there imput would be welcome. also any info on the day to day practicality and expense of running a 7.5 would be greatly appreciated.

Cat C is rigid bodies vehicle upto 32 tonnes. If you get that with +E you get the full on artic 44 tonnes HGV license.

For 7.5t you want C1. with +E you get 12t combined (so 5.5t trailer). C1 will cover you for the smaller MOGs as far as I'm aware.

Running a 7.5t tipper towing a chipper isn't very expensive in my experience. Around town I was still getting decent enough MPG and servicing was not a lot different to a transit. Above 3.5t you've got to be aware of tachographs and the various implications.

The pre 97 licence holder can drive a combination (truck and trailer) not exceeding 8250kg so a 7.5 tonner can drag 750kg but a 6 tonner can drag 2250kg.

You can do what is effectively a trailer test for the 7.5 tonner to take you up to a train weight of 12000kg so your 7.5 tonner can drag up to 4500kg (3500 on over run brakes) and subject to the towing vehicles maximum authorised train weight.

Running a vehicle over 3500kg will need an operator’s licence (“O” licence). This will require a suitable operating centre (your domestic drive probably won’t do!) Google operators licence for more info. It costs more to run LGV’s but your work rate goes up pro rata.

thanks for both of your comments. what are they like regards getting stuck in mud and wet grass? allso with a license gained after 97 would you need the trailer ticket aswell with 750kg and under weight.

I'd avoid anything muddy. Most are 4X2 and have road tyres so are not going to be much use. You'll get away with it most of the time but when you do get stuck you'll really know about it. Not only would a fully loaded 7.5t with a chipper on the back be a pig to get moving you're also going to churn the site up in the process. Not great from the customers perspective.

Been looking into this as well. Licence passed after 97 can drive up to 3.5tn with a trailer up to 750kg on standard B grade without having to pass the E part. For trailers over 750kg the max weight of the trailer cannot be over the weight of the towing car/van and the weight of the two put together cannot exceed 3.5tn as far as i understand.:thumbup1:

Get the one that allows you to drive the biggest thing possible Bill, Like i told you today, It'll serve you very well over your career if you can get HGV or similar at your age, Coz very few your age will have it mate :thumbup1:

My B+E trainning was £35 p/h with the test at £115. I think the C1 test is the same but training will set you back about £600 quid i think you need to get a medical done by your doctor for C1 too. You definatly do for cat C which cost even more. Thing that if you get your C+E you also get C1+E too but you still won't be able to drive a landy with a 3.5t trailer as that is B+E.
