And since it's on the subject of mounting a GRCS for removals rather than pruning, has anyone got any tips for solid mounting? I'm thinking along the lines of taking the rubber feet off and replacing them with spikes.

Or get a smart winch less can go wrong with it

As it happens I'd rather have a Smartwinch. But as it happens I do have a GRCS and want a visor plate for it.

Visor plate works well, not stupid money. Also cutting in the GRCS to get a good solid mounting helps a lot. I like your idea of some spikes to replace the rubber feet, although with a good solid mount and the biggest chap on site cranking the strap up have rarely had movement.

My Hobbs has never moved when cranked hard (has a couple of times when not). It's got far better pointy bits on the frame.

Would ideally like to pin the GRCS to the stem with some gurt lag screws too but there's nowhere very obvious to do that. I'll see how I get on with it with a mind to one day building a better one.
