Holly berry

I planted a holly tree in my garden 30 years ago and was told it was male and would never have berries. I have just found one berry. What is going on.?

These are well documented in species the world over, especially during times of reproductive scarcity, so I do wonder...

Never spontaneously, as far as I know.

I'm sure the number of species incapable of it far outweighs those that can, but it does happen!
