Yes it was on an ash limb,as the growth rings of the timber depict,it also had fairly advanced ganno at the base, hence take down in a built up area.

the whole tree virtualy was infected, that particular piece was jumbled up in the heap in the yard by the time I got my paws on it,but most of the wood has hollows or shows similar colour.

We had a bat inspector on site to check each piece we lowered out, used a soft fell approach taking out whole limbs and lowering gently to the ground.no bats were found.

She was a big old ash, shame to have to take it but was getting dangerous.

The piece shown is about 18 1nches in diameter.

was a pollard/second chance out of the question? well impressed with the softly appraoch and bat work! good on ya.

WE have to be the ones to change this, we CAN do it, we HAVE to do it, insurance companies only know numbers, mathematical risk equations, and so they employ those arbs they KNOW will conform to THIER view of the situation.

Its time for change.

cheers for the reply. Not sure who the carver was, but it was at Tatton park last sept. Got some more good shots of the moth (weird "hummingbird hawk moth???)

The camera is a Cannon IXUS 85 15. Lovely little compact job. Well pleased with it. Get some great close up shots with it.
