Morning all.

Good day yesterday at the mining museum, tour given by a 3rd generation miner that worked there most of his days. A wealth of knowledge that made for an interesting afternoon.

 

Not so sure about the hedgecutter in the car park though.

Feeling lethargic today but there are chores to do.

They left most of the engineering kit in the pits I was told, too expensive to get it out for scrap!

 

Nice from were I'm looking, good enough for a walk along Stonebarrow this morning!

That's what the guide said, that particular machine never 'worked' underground, it came from a training place for display.

My family cut pit props in their mill back in the day, thousands of lorry loads through the 50's upto mid 70's but the Elm ran out and more steel shoring was used. The asked us to start cutting again before the strike but the timber was too expensive, transport too dear and labour costs had risen but their rates had barely moved. Half of the Leicestershire, Staffordshire and Derbyshire pits were propped up with Barrowcliff props!
