Sycamores-weeds?

They are a important tree in this country now imo, few deseases, structurally strong. They have filled the void left by the demise of the elms and to treat them as weeds is folly.

From a conservational angle, mature Sycamores atract the largest Biomass of all UK trees.

On the one hand this could be considered beneficial, although the biomass is generally extremely limited in species diversity,

mainly just tons and tons of aphids, but a bugs got to eat !

Compare this to a Mature Oak which can have upwards of 400 + individual species crawling, jumping and growing all over it.

 

I guess this adds weight to the arguement that invasive pioneer Tree species such as Sycamore could be considered weeds due to the detremental effect it has on the diversity of our woodland eco systems.

The one thing you do get with Sycamore is showered with greenfly when working in them.

u wouldnt be calling them weeds if u had a rippled sycamore butt.....sycamore has many uses especially top quality furniture, also used for bread and butchers cutting board as its doesnt stain the meat.

 

the probelm with the sycamore is ability to self seed better than any other tree.

The trees are good specimens and are a valuable tree around here as Oaks are suffering from past dry summers and Chestnuts are as we know in a bad way. Not much Ash around this area in question. Sycamores can tolorate some change so I think should be retained where possible.

As for reduction vs fell. Valid point as they can look odd after a trim as all secondary branches are opposite ie no decent leaders or branch taper!

Not sure how they rate as conservation trees though.??

This really ticks me of,mature Sycamores are imo one of our most beautiful trees,the timber is of great value,also good fire wood,people seem to dislike things that are successful

I too am in the Sycamore Appreciation Society...

They use sycamore as inlays in sail boat making.

 

I too am a fan of them, unless I am having to hand carry the timber, heavy stuff.
