Unauthorised tree planting

Got heaps of used tree tubes, don't know if that will protect them from the flail, or just bring unwanted attention!

I reckon a length of steel tube is more likely to protect from the flail...

Tempted to hide a few lengths of scrap tube I have in local hedges to protect them in cutting season.

I just think it's a shame that hedges across most of Ireland are mown, rather than trimmed, with no opportunity given to young trees to grow up  and replace those lost to storms or die back. There needs to be a selection made for succession, and any tree lucky enough to be chosen could be protected with a length of steel tube,  roadsign style, with a small sign on top to prevent accidental mowing.

A hedgerow is a fine thing, especially when managed sympathetically... and not just mown into the ground.

Put a load of apple trees in the woods (spares I didn't need, some grown from seed) - and they did OK till I mowed a path through the nettles to take a look and see what they were like. Went back the next week, all the leaves eaten off them and a very full deer sat underneath one thanking me for the free meal and handy access route.

 

Got a plan for a row of hawthorn on some spare ground near the road - far enough away though that they won't get trimmed, renimnds me, I should go out and harvest the seeds for them (it is a longer term plan...)

That reminds me... does anyone know if blackthorn seeds are still viable after 12 months in a bottle of gin? Seems a shame to waste them...

Providing he's not ingesting them and leaving presents in the hedge row, that's fine with me.

 

Or worse still the metal poles idea, if anyone did that to mine I would probably knock another 2ft of the hedge just to highlight my dissatisfaction.

A childhood pals dad used to pull out saplings from the woods on his cycle home from work and plant them up in the local park. When that got full he started planting along the road to the next village, then to another village. They're all coming along a bit now, and the council have started maintaining his plantings in the park. 

Off the back of that I've started popping in the odd tree in parks etc. If you talk about it to residents they only get furious at the idea of more trees, blocking views etc. If you just go ahead the nay sayers will likely be dead before the trees are significant, and they're children, grand children etc will most likely see some value in them.
