Double rope/anchors

Maybe been discussed before...but if you're using two ropes in a canopy and one of the anchors fail dragging you down, whilst still being held by the remaining anchor...whats the procedure?!

Scream like a girl. If your  still alive and functioning, cut away the failed anchor and rope, come down have a cup of tea, a fag and carry on.

If this happened I’d be lanyarding in to something quickly, remove the material from the failed anchor point to take the increased load of the primary anchor, work out why it failed was it too small? Was there decay that made it fail? We’re you using a rigging point above it? If the tree is sound re anchor and then carry on. So many variables, especially if rigging was also involved

Yep get a lanyard on if theres time then sort the other rope out. If it’s got a heavy stem on it and is under a lot of tension and quick tap with a silky will be enough to tether it.

 

better solution would be to boycott the twin rope system and avoid the risk

If your anchor is at the top of one of the tallest USA Coastal Redwoods and it broke and it didn’t hit any more limbs on the way down you’d probably have about 10 secs before it hit the ground? Doesn’t give a lot of time to do much really except swear! If your  below half way up and your other anchor is near the top and nothing hits you - you might get away with it. Of course that doesn’t allow for the increase in velocity the further it travels? So with all the finest scientific brains working it out you could have a few seconds either way. Ask the AA, they no doubt thought about this possibility when they presented their thoughts on using double ropes with the HSE 🤔.

I think people were falling out of trees because of poor anchor point choices, epi regen on rail trees etc.

 

Adding a second rope means they can make twice as many poor anchor point choices.

the correct procedure is "shit your pants,then try and get down asap"

it hasnt happened to me but i watched it happen to a fellow worker.... not much fun.
